What makes this even funnier is that Nick Meyer swears that he has never in his life dressed as Sherlock Holmes. He does admit to arranging particularly difficult scenes to film on nights when the NY opera was performing in LA. This allowed him to slip away and take a shower while the crew was setting up, put on a suit, get back in time to film the scene, then go directly to the opera after they wrapped. I have Leonard Nimoy’s memoir on the way to hear out his side of the story, but apparently Leonard, while preparing to film Spock’s tragic death by radiation poisoning while saving the ship, saw his director with his hair slicked back dressed up for the opera, had the thought, “why the fuck is this weirdo dressed up like Sherlock Holmes to film my death,” shared this thought with no one, and went back to anxiously preparing for the scene.

Leonard WHY would you say that Nick Meyer was wearing a deerstalker and Inverness cape to his job and later to the opera if he wasn’t wearing that. Although the image of Sherlock Holmes in full getup standing on a ladder like a tennis referee presiding over Spock’s radiation chamber death is definitely going to stay with me forever, so in that sense I do see why you would make that up.
realising with this one that a lot of my favourite parts of thob aren’t so much details and isolated bits of the episode proper as they are things which taste absolutely exquisite in the broader context of the show. thob 🤝 tld, etc. emotions and sentiment and desperately trying to convince oneself that they are not clouding one’s judgement and that it’s inherently a bad thing if they are. mwah.
